Rock’n’Roll changed the lives of almost everyone growing up in the 60’s and early 70’s, and Kent County, Delaware was no exception. The Beatles and the British Invasion gave rise to countless bands of young men (and some women) making their mark on the local music scene.
From teen parties and school dances to the county-wide Holy Cross “Canteen” and a number of “under-age” clubs, young musicians found opportunities to bring their music before their friends in an explosion of sound and – often – genuine creativity.
Then, almost everybody grew up and moved on with their lives. . . We became doctors and lawyers, architects and contractors, teachers and business-people. Kids and careers took center-stage, and – for most of us – music was something we listened to on the radio.
In early 2007, a Dover High graduate named Dave O’Brien changed reality for a lot of people. Retired and living in Florida, Dave started collecting names, phone numbers and email addresses of old classmates, and their friends, and their friends’ friends. Soon, he had a pretty impressive database, and Dave decided it would be interesting to organize a reunion – not one class from one school, but a whole generation from all of Kent County. The concept was actually fairly simple. . .send emails to as many people as you can collect, and invite them to meet at the center of the boardwalk on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach on July 14, 2007 at 11 am, then see what happens. What happened was that a couple of hundred people showed up on that unbelievably clear and sunny Saturday morning for a day filled with memories and beginnings.
Meanwhile, back in March, somebody had another bright idea: “Wouldn’t it be incredible to get a bunch of the people who played in bands back then together and do some kind of concert for this reunion?”
The result was “The Dover All-Stars Rock’n’Soul Reunion Concert” at the Rehoboth Bandstand on July 14, 2007, with nearly 40 musicians coming together to recapture a special period of time when the music of a generation touched us all. By any standard, it was an incredible event – and some of us didn’t want it to end. In August, 2007, THE DRAW began to take shape. The new band was envisioned as a “house-band” for future reunion concerts, as well as a band that would develop a broad repertoire focused on “classic rock” with eclectic musical influences, a “big band” with a standard rock’n’roll rhythm section, complemented by horns and Latin percussion. THE DRAW made its public debut in October, 2007, at a benefit in Dover. Since March, 2008, the band has appeared in venues throughout Delaware, the Eastern Shore of Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania.THE DRAW was the featured attraction at the 2nd & 3rd Annual Dover All-Stars Reunion Concerts at the Rehoboth Bandstand in 2008 & 2009.
THE DRAW is available for your listening and dancing pleasure, especially if you’re planning a special fund-raising event for a worthy cause. At the same time, we’re good at making music – so the band is available for a wide range of special events, galas, dances, parties, weddings, club appearances and more at competitive commercial rates.
